Beyond Boundaries...
About Students Beyond Boundaries for Service-Learning
This project, supported by a $450,000 grant from Learn and Serve America over three years, will encourage college students to use social media tools such as Facebook, Ning, Blogger, Flickr, YouTube, Wet Paint, and Twitter to support service-learning projects in their communities. Students will use social media
- to collaborate with community partners to assess needs and develop service-learning projects to meet those needs while supporting students' educational goals;
- to plan and implement the project in close partnership with community partners;
- to recruit friends and fellow students to participate;
- to reflect on the impact of service-learning projects on the community and the student; and
- to document the results of the projects.
What is the Award Amount?
There is no upper limit on the amount of money that can be requested. However, for every $200 that is awarded, projects must engage at least 5 students. Additionally, at least a fifty percent funding match is required for all projects.
Who is Eligible?
Recognized student organizations or faculty members teaching service-learning courses at Consortium member institutions are eligible to apply. At least one student must be designated as a project leader. The student submitting the proposal is required to work with his or her professor or faculty sponsor and institutional representative to the Consortium, who must evaluate and approve the application and electronically forward it to the Consortium office. (To be recognized as a Consortium member, the institution must have submitted a current Furco self-assessment and baseline data by October 1, 2008. Institutions that have received grants from the Consortium previously must be current on reports. For more information, see: MidwestConsortium.org).

Instructions for Applying
Applications for Students Beyond Boundaries grants will be accepted at the office of the Midwest Consortium and will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants are encouraged to submit their proposal well before the application deadline because the application must be processed by the applicant's institution (see Consortium Member Institutions, below) before it is forwarded to the Consortium.
